United Family Healthcare First Private Provider in China with Robotic da Vinci® Si Surgical System

This month, Beijing United Family Hospital and Clinics (BJU), the full-service flagship hospital of the United Family Healthcare (UFH) network, became the first private hospital facility in China to be equipped with a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive, da Vinci® Si Surgical System robotic platform. BJU held its third successful da Vinci surgery today, a complicated gastric procedure that benefitted greatly from this advanced technology.

The da Vinci® Si Surgical System uses the latest in robotics technologies to accomplish complex precision surgical procedures. It features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and tiny instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist to complete complex procedures through keyhole access. As a result, da Vinci enables United Family surgeons the ability to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control that goes beyond what is normally possible through direct open surgery. The da Vinci can be used for the most elaborate surgeries and complicated cases, allowing patients shorter recovery times, less bleeding and less complications.  It has been used to treat a wide range of diseases, with a track record of millions of successful procedures worldwide.

“As a pioneering organization that has been consistently bringing healthcare innovation to China for almost twenty years, we are proud to offer our patients the very best in medical technology and international standard care,” said Roberta Lipson, Board Chair of UFH. “The da Vinci System helps fulfill our commitment to offering the best treatment options to patients in Asia. As our premium network joins an elite group of hospitals in the world that employ robotic surgery, we are already seeing the benefits of this technology here at Beijing United Family Hospital.”

The latest minimally invasive robotic surgery at Beijing United Family Hospital was a successful gastric stromal tumor removal carried out by Dr. Ji Jiafu, president of the renowned Peking Union Medical College Hospital, which partnered with BJU on the project.

“With the new da Vinci Si System and our partnerships with leading medical institutions like Peking University Cancer Hospital, we are truly embodying the gold standard of healthcare here in China,” said Sylvia Pan, General Manager of BJU. “We are providing even better care for our patients and elevating our services to a whole new level.”

With the da Vinci, surgeons only need to make several small incisions which leave less pain, bleeding, and offer a quicker recovery. The system’s endoscope enables surgeons to operate within a three-dimensional, high definition surgical field, magnified 20 times to maximize precision.

The ultra-flexible, 360 degree range of motion and fine motor control of the robotic arms gives surgeons unparalleled operating ability where human hands cannot reach. In addition, the da Vinci System features a stabilizer, which provides unrivalled accuracy and stability during surgery. The platform’s advanced design and real-time monitoring system ensures the safety of patients, provides greater results, and minimizes the chance of surgical error.
